fakechroot in make-debirf has problems when http_proxy points to localhost

For some reason plugins that call apt-get have problems when being run under fakechroot when the http_proxy environment variables points to localhost:
servo:0:~/cmrg/debirf> http_proxy=http://localhost:3128/ make-debirf ./rescue /var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image-2.6.22-2-686_2.6.22-4_i386.deb ... run-parts: executing ./rescue/plugins/a0_apt-update Err http://debian.lcs.mit.edu lenny Release.gpg Could not resolve 'localhost' Ign http://debian.lcs.mit.edu lenny Release Err http://debian.lcs.mit.edu lenny/main Packages Could not resolve 'localhost' Failed to fetch http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/dists/lenny/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'localhost' Failed to fetch http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/debian/dists/lenny/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz Could not resolve 'localhost' Reading package lists... Done E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. ...
It runs fine if the http_proxy environment variable is removed.
