option to completely purge old root when writing over old root

i think we should probably completely purge the old root when choosing to write over an old root when an old root exists. or at least give the option to. or maybe we should just leave it up to the creator to purge the old root? i worry that there could be some old stuff in the root that could adversely affect a new install after a release update, say. maybe it's not such a big deal, come to think of it, since i don't purge the root on my tpc when i update...
